Presentation

The sights and sounds of SOCOM

From the opening of SOCOM: Special Forces on PlayStation 3, it's clear that developer Zipper Interactive means business. With its polished, Hollywood style cutscenes which introduce the special forces team, this third person shooter locks you firmly in its sights and never lets go.

You're immediately greeted with detailed visuals that drop you into a steamy and bullet laden South East Asia. The hot, leafy surroundings and dank industrial backdrops are convincing locations for the intense firefights of SOCOM: Special Forces, made even more incredible if you have a stereoscopic 3D compatible TV to really bring the jungle warfare to life. And while the spectacular cocktail of bullets and explosions impresses, it's the amazing facial modelling of the characters which brings a subtle drama to the story.

Perfect aural accompaniment comes from an edgy string driven soundtrack composed by Bear McCreary, the man behind the music of TV series such as The Walking Dead. His evocative compositions lend a powerful weight to the action, drawing you deeper into the game as your team becomes immersed behind enemy lines.

SOCOM: Special Forces is a well crafted game which makes you feel right at home with its glossy, big screen sensibilities.

Gameplay

SOCOM, so good

SOCOM: Special Forces on PlayStation 3 represents years of refinement in the tactical shooter genre. Taking the squad strategy elements from previous SOCOM titles and mixing these with high impact set pieces, your task as field commander has never been so exhilarating... or so dangerous.

While you directly control the commander of the five-man squad, your teammates act of their own accord until you give them orders, such as taking down a chosen target or moving to a selected waypoint. Areas can swiftly turn into deadly war zones without a good strategy in mind, so it pays to have a plan.

Stealth is encouraged to prevent a grisly demise, something which is emphasised by four covert missions in the 14 level single player mode. Sneaking into an enemy compound is a great change of pace to the heavy action sections of the game.

Want to ramp up the scorching action even more? SOCOM: Special Forces is compatible with the PlayStation Move motion controller and sharp shooter, putting extra precision in your hands. When it comes to taking down the Naga and leading your squad, PS Move puts you firmly in command with its swiftly intuitive controls.

With its well thought out design, such as easily located markers that point out where you need to go and a pause screen which recaps your current mission objective, SOCOM: Special Forces is a game anyone can pick up and play. You don't have to be an expert marksman or a SOCOM veteran to earn your stripes on this field, so make sure you give it a shot.

Multiplayer

Hired guns

While the odds are overwhelming and you may be outnumbered, you're never outgunned in SOCOM: Special Forces thanks to an excellent range of multiplayer modes. By bringing some friends you can enjoy a series of special online co-operative missions for up to five players, and a 32 player online multiplayer mode, all via PlayStation Network.

Co-op mode drops you in a customised environment where you have to complete objectives from a selection of six varied maps. You choose the weapons and the range of enemies you'll be fighting against. Co-ordination is the only way to survive, so make sure you pick up a wireless headset to relay strategy with your friends - and don't worry if you don't have a full squad, as computer-controlled teammates can be added to make up the numbers.

If you fancy something a little more competitive, there are four modes in the 32 player romp to get your blood pumping: Suppression, Last Defence, Uplink and Bomb Squad. Each one is full of entertaining and frenzied warfare where the advantage can swing between teams in an instant and, if you don't use your head, you're in danger of losing it.

Both competitive and co-operative modes feature rich environments, with lots of cover and flanking areas, making for some spectacular firefights. The more you play, the more your player level and in-game stats increase, offering plenty of incentive to return for another blast. Make sure your friends are ready, because SOCOM: Special Forces on PlayStation 3 is an explosive multiplayer feast of fun.

Story

The fightback starts here

Battle an entire empire determined to see you dead in Killzone 3, exclusive to PlayStation 3. Cut off from home with your few remaining comrades dropping like flies, it's a supreme test of your courage in the face of gut-wrenching adversity.

As Tomas "Sev" Sevchenko, you pick up right where the incredible events of Killzone 2 concluded. With the Helghast emperor Visari dead at your feet, you witness not the crumbling of his empire, but instead a massive uprising as assault ships and massed ranks of troops gather to hunt you down.

Your objective is simple: survive and escape. Achieving it is anything but. You have the aftermath of nuclear war to contend with, a devastated capital of Pyrrhus to navigate and the most single-minded enemy on PlayStation in the Helghast.

As you fight for your existence, so the Helghast feud among themselves. An epic struggle in the corridors of power within Pyrrhus means Helghast strategy pitches between the brute force favoured by Admiral Orlock and the more subversive plotting of Chairman Stahl, head of a terrifying weapons project. Yet their squabbling only serves to ramp up the ferocity of the soldiers on your trail.

It's adapt or die. Turn Helghast weapons and tactics against them and you just might find a way off their planet alive.

Presentation

Setting new standards

Prepare yourself for one of the most stunning all-round experiences on PlayStation 3. Whether you decide to sample its explosive thrills alone or in the company of friends, Killzone 3 is never anything less than jaw-dropping.

While the scenario is one of desperate survival for you and your scattered comrades, the world of Helghan is an extraordinary feast for the eyes. You'll journey through freezing wastelands, the gloomy shell of Pyrrhus, brilliantly colourful jungles, a vast junkyard and the buzzing hive of the Helghast war effort itself. The art direction sets a new benchmark for what can be realised using the power of PlayStation 3 – Killzone 3 is a world you'd happily explore if it wasn't for the bloodthirsty army on your tail.

Play Killzone 3 in glorious stereoscopic 3D and you'll discover an even richer experience – foliage in Helghan's jungle clings to your rifle, your stomach leaps during an airborne assault and Helghast bullets fly a little too close for comfort.

Add a friend to the mix in the split screen Co-op Campaign Mode and you gain a second set of eyes, vital if you want to attempt the ultimate test of your abilities: the Elite difficulty level. However you choose to play, Killzone 3 is a sensational strike to the senses.

Gameplay

Hell down on Helghan

As Sergeant Tomas "Sev" Sevchenko, you simply never know when to give up, even if that means facing down the barrels of several Helghast guns. You load another clip, take a deep breath and unleash hell – as often as it takes to beat a path to freedom.

Measured aggression wins over blind fury every time. Charge into the fray without taking stock and you'll be cut down in the blink of an eye. Find cover using the L2 button, then pick your target and fire. The hot-headed Rico Velasquez is at your side through most of the campaign, providing support fire, medical back-up and plenty of wry one-liners.

Fighting through the Helghast homeland means access to their formidable arsenal: the WASP multiple missile launcher doubles as an artillery gun, the Boltgun fires explosive metal rods to pin the enemy down, while the Flamethrower is perfect for close combat. When facing a ruthless enemy looking to outflank and outgun you, it pays to fight fire with fire.

Strap on the Jet Pack with its heavy machine gun, use the Exoskeleton to unleash a barrage of rockets, commandeer the Ice Saw tank to blast enemy drop ships... do whatever it takes to survive Killzone 3 on PlayStation 3.

Multiplayer

An even deadlier foe

Dealt a crushing blow to the Helghast in the Campaign Mode of Killzone 3? Then face off against an enemy even more ruthless than the Helghast when you take the war online via PlayStation Network.

Three game modes await, each offering an exciting take on the war on Helghan. Operations Mode features three missions in which the ISA and the Helghast battle for control of specific objectives, linked together by a driving narrative. Warzone sees you attempt missions that change every time you play, while Guerrilla Warfare is a straightforward fight to the death.

Choose from one of five character classes and earn points which unlock bonus items to improve your abilities, such as increased ammo or hardened armour. Each class offers a compelling new way to play. The Marksman, for instance, is perfect for those who like to bide their time and attack from distance, whereas the Infiltrator allows you to adopt disguises to get up close and personal.

Brutal melee attacks allow you to silently kill an opponent with the L1 button, and to get even closer to the action, use the PlayStation Move sharp shooter to command the battlefield with unrivalled accuracy.

Intuitive control, close quarters combat and a truly multilayered experience – the online features of Killzone 3 prove the game really is just the start.

Presentation

Ahoy shipmates!

LEGO Pirates of the Caribbean: The Video Game throws you right into the heart of the action, introducing you to a colourful cast including Captain Jack Sparrow, Elizabeth Swann and Will Turner in LEGO form.

The charming LEGO characters are by no means static figures; each one has cheeky facial expressions and delightful physical movements that make them a pleasure to watch. Even Captain Jack walks with the hilarious swagger that he possesses in the Pirates of the Caribbean films, and pirate Ragetti can take out his glass eye for fun. In combat, attacking a player with your sword won't draw any blood, but will dismantle your opponent into separate pieces, sending LEGO body parts flying everywhere in hilarious battle scenes.

Locations and settings from the films look fabulous in LEGO form, from the extravagant pirate ships with their cannons and crew, to the sun-kissed desert islands, complete with palm trees and exotic birds.

The game is divided into four adventures, one focussing on each of the films. Once you complete The Curse of the Black Pearl you can move on to any of the other three quests, which are all located in the game's hub - The Port. There are treasures to be found and puzzles to solve here, too - just watch out for the crocodiles.

Gameplay

A pirate's life

All aboard! Packed with swashbuckling adventures based on the four Pirates of the Caribbean films, LEGO Pirates of the Caribbean: The Video Game has set sail on PlayStation 3,

Your adventure begins as blacksmith apprentice Will Turner in Port Royal. From the outset, you must utilise the abilities of the different characters to solve puzzles and complete challenges by switching between them. Will's boss Mr Brown fixes things with his hammer, while female characters jump higher to reach ledges and ropes.

Captain Jack Sparrow is the star of LEGO Pirates of the Caribbean: The Video Game. Use his trusty compass to find hidden objects, just select the item you want to look for and follow the trail - as in all good pirate stories, X marks the spot. There are tons of treasures stashed throughout the game that unlock new areas and help you solve puzzles.

There is so much treasure, in fact, that you won't be able to collect it all in the extensive Story Mode. Once a stage is complete, go back to it in Free Play mode and take all of the characters you have unlocked with you. You can then use their abilities to enter buildings and solve challenges that you couldn't previously.

Multiplayer

Captain your crew

Teamwork is essential in LEGO Pirates of the Caribbean: The Video Game. In the single player mode you can switch between characters to use each of their unique abilities.

If you don't fancy taking on a crew of deadly buccaneers on your own, grab a shipmate and take on the pirates together. Two players can sail the high seas in the local co-operative multiplayer mode. At any point, a second player can join the game and help you on your mission. Together, you can solve puzzles, find treasure and beat the evil pirates.

There are over 70 characters to play as, including Captain Barbosa, Davy Jones and Anamaria. Collect them on your journey or head to The Port and buy new characters with the loot you find.

Story

Defeat the darkness

Two thousand years ago in Central America, a battle began between Totec, the Guardian of the Light, and Xolotl, the Keeper of Darkness. Totec's army was defeated when Xolotl harnessed the power of the mirror of smoke to unleash hordes of ghastly creatures on the ancient world.

Fortunately, Totec survived the battle and found a way to defeat Xolotl by imprisoning him in the mirror of smoke and guarding the mirror disguising himself as an immortal stone statue. Fast-forward to the present day and Lara Croft, explorer extraordinaire, discovers the story behind the legend and sets out on a journey to find the mirror. She succeeds, but the mirror is quickly snatched from her by a band of mercenaries led by a tyrannical local warlord.

In a moment of foolishness, the warlord inadvertently breaks the curse that binds Xolotl and frees the ancient evil from his stone prison. Now, with the help of Totec, Lara must destroy Xolotl before dawn, or the world will be plunged into an eternal darkness and all humanity will be lost forever.

Gameplay

Lara or Totec?

Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light is an interesting departure from the Tomb Raider series on PlayStation 3. For one, it is the first wholly downloadable Lara title that's available to buy now on PlayStation Store (alongside the original Tomb Raider classic, if you're feeling nostalgic). It's also played from an isometric perspective and is more of an arcade style adventure than any of the Tomb Raider games that have come before it.

You play as either Lara or Totec, depending on which character you chose at the outset of the game. Playing as Lara you get to wield her trademark pistols, which have infinite ammo. There are other weapons up for grabs in the game including a spear, machine gun, flame thrower and shotgun. The spears are extremely useful for reaching areas normally out of range because they can be used to pierce some walls or soft terrain and then used as leverage.

Lara also has a grappling hook she can use to shimmy up and down walls or swing across huge chasms. As you explore the vast map there are plenty of treasures and power-ups to be found hidden in secret areas, as well as urns and special rooms that present brain-teasing puzzles for you to solve. Some require completion in an allotted time limit whilst others involve battling large waves of enemies. It's worth seeking these rooms out because they often reward you with ammo, health and special upgrades that enhance your combat abilities and chances of survival.

Multiplayer

Tomb raiding teamwork

Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light features a two player co-operative mode that enables you to drop in and out of a friend's game at any point in the campaign via PlayStation Network. In co-operative mode, the game places a heavy emphasis on teamwork between Lara and Totec and the puzzles and maps differ from those found in the single player campaign to reflect this.

Totec's shield can be used to hoist Lara up onto ledges and Lara can also balance on spears that he sticks to walls to cross certain gaps. To return the favour, Lara can clasp her grappling hook to objects and Totec can then walk along the tightrope to cross over into new areas. The more you play through the story Totec will learn from Lara and can then use her modern day weapons on enemies.

To add a competitive edge to the whole experience, every time a player takes down an enemy they are awarded points which are tallied at the end of the level and rewarded with unlockable treats. The catch is that there are only a limited number of foes in each mission, so be sure to get to them before your friend does if you want to win.

See how good times and sporting glory can sparkle in Virtua Tennis 4 on PS3.

Gameplay

Making a real racket

What turns a good tennis player into a world beater? Power, precision and perseverance, certainly. Not to mention catching chickens, playing cards and lobbing explosives at an opponent.

Virtua Tennis 4 sharpens your skills using these activities as training mini-games to strengthen your player's core skills. As you chase hens, you increase defence. Hitting cards to form a winning poker hand increases tactical flair. And smashing bombs back and forth improves your shot selection – understandably.

These offbeat sessions prepare your player during the World Tour mode, where an innovative map encourages a strategic route through each season. Planning ahead is a must to ensure you don't skip lucrative tournaments – and if you do miss out the big time, you can always play through again for an entirely new experience.

Varying your timing and positioning on court reveals a barrage of winning shots, and whether you play as legends like Boris Becker, Stefan Edberg or Pat Rafter – all exclusive to PS3 – or your own starlet, it pays to experiment in early matches.

Combine your imaginative play with PlayStation Move, and you'll have the entire World Tour quaking in their locker rooms. Subtle flicks of the PlayStation Move motion controller add bewildering swerve or top spin, while a smooth serving motion launches a rocket over the net and up the tour rankings.

Multiplayer

Everyone for tennis

Gather your friends around and turn up the TV for an unbeatable sporting spectacle, as Virtua Tennis 4 invites everyone to chance their arm in a range of multiplayer modes.

Authentic, top-level tennis can be recreated by heading to Arcade mode, where four of the biggest championships can be played out with up to three friends. Shoot-outs in London, New York, Melbourne and Paris add a truly international flavour – why not hold your own tennis festival to coincide with glitzy real life tournaments?

Take light-hearted tennis one step further by playing in Party mode, the perfect place to unwind with the mini-games of Virtua Tennis 4. Save yourself the dilemma of trying to describe how you chased crazy chickens or played tennis-football by letting your friends try for themselves.

With structured competition coming in the form of ranked, online matches – in singles or doubles mode – Virtua Tennis 4 has all bases covered, no matter how seriously you take the sport.

Add PlayStation Move to the mix and you'll be serving up the quintessential tennis experience on PS3. Just add strawberries and cream.

The greatest dancer...

Have you ever dreamed of being a pop star? Have you got the voice, the moves and the stage presence to make it in the big time? Well now you can sing, boogie and show the world your talent with SingStar Dance.

With 30 great songs to select from Gloria Gaynor's I Will Survive to Living La Vida Loca by Ricky Martin, you'll find plenty of hits to strut your stuff to. If you're dancing, grab your PlayStation Move motion controller, mirror the moves of the on-screen dancers and give the performance of your life. If you're belting out the tune, pick up a SingStar Microphone and sing your heart out.

While you're lighting up the dance floor, check out what you look like in action by pressing the Circle button on your PlayStation Move motion controller. This allows you to flip between the original artist's video and your live performance being recorded through your PlayStation Eye camera.

Once the gig is over, you can take a look at your full performance and upload your highlights to My SingStar Online so the world can see your talent.

Gameplay

I bet that you look good on the dance floor

Clear a space in your front room, calibrate your PlayStation Move motion controller and take a deep breath - it's time to dance. If you've always wanted to be a performer but never fancied yourself as much of a singer, this is the perfect game for you.

While two people can pick up a SingStar Microphone and sing to their favourite tracks, two more can grab a PlayStation Move motion controller and bust some moves. Dance routines have been tailored to reflect the original music videos, so you can really feel like Lady Gaga's entourage while your partner sings Poker Face.

SingStar Dance has been carefully developed to offer a new experience that remains true to the SingStar series. The game can be played as a regular SingStar title if you don't fancy a dance and at the same time offers loads of extras and enhancements for those who want to throw some crazy shapes on the dance floor.

Rhythm is a dancer

Forget the dancing lessons; SingStar Dance is all you need to learn the moves to become the next big thing. When you calibrate your PlayStation Move motion controller with your PlayStation Eye camera, they will accurately measure your height and reach to ensure you get maximum points for your dancing efforts.

Follow the movements of the on-screen dancer while holding your PlayStation Move motion controller and mimic their actions to score points. The more accurate you are, the more points you get. As your dancing skills improve, try the dances in harder modes and see how many points you can score.

If you're really looking to impress, make each dance even more special by adding some cool effects to your PlayStation Move. Glittery stars or a silver trail will add some extra sparkle to your performance.

Multiplayer

I wanna dance with somebody

Up to four players can join in the fun of SingStar Dance, with two singing and two dancing. You can go mic to mic and see who the better duo is, dance solo, in partners or just turn I Like To Move It up full blast and have a crazy boogie with your friends.

There really is nothing better than watching yourself getting down to the beat of classic tracks like Everybody by The Backstreet Boys, or funky hits such as Gwen Stefani's What You Waiting For?

If you just fancy belting out some of your favourite tunes, eight of you can get together for a sing along in Pass the Mic Mode. So, get your friends round, put your dancing shoes on and party the night away with SingStar Dance.

About NGP with Shuhei Yoshida part 2

In the second part of our exclusive interview with the president of SCE Worldwide Studios (WWS), find out how NGP will open up new gameplay experiences on the move.

What are the key changes and opportunities that NGP provides in game design?
There are many opportunities that NGP offers, not least with regards to core game inputs and outputs, new and unique user interfaces and social connectivity. With the newly developed 5-inch OLED screen which has four times the screen resolution of PSP, the core hardware performance, support for PlayStation 3 generation graphics, and the dual analog sticks that give precise control, NGP will be by far the best portable platform for gamers.

In addition, with the combination of the touchscreen and rear touch pad; gyro sensors and accelerometers based on PlayStation Move; front and rear cameras and the core CPU performance, we can develop new types of casual games or applications that are not possible on home consoles. The new user interfaces will be able to enhance core gamers' gameplay experiences, making this more intuitive and immersive.

Social connectivity is an integral part of the NGP game experience, and each game will feature LiveArea, where your friends' activities will constantly show up and where you can chat with your friends, as well as find out new information related to that game, availability of new downloads, and location based information using NGP's in-built GPS feature. These functions will help consumers connect to other NGP gamers, as well as add another layer of fun by making consumers feel part of the game community.

How will the inclusion of dual analog sticks enhance gameplay?
Some could argue that dual analog sticks have been one of the biggest contributions by PlayStation to the games industry. Since we introduced them to the market on the original PlayStation, they have become a standard input method for home console hardcore games. Playing 3D games [not stereoscopic 3D] with two sets of independent, tight analog inputs is invaluable to controlling the game character and the game camera. The stick factor of the NGP analog stick is also very significant; when you try the NGP dual analog sticks yourself, you will immediately understand what the world has been missing in portable games. It feels fantastic.

What does the touchscreen mean for game development and how will it be used?
The ability to interact directly with game objects and the game world on-screen using the screen on the front of the NGP has been proven by smart phones and tablet devices. It is so intuitive that anyone can get involved. By combining the intuitive nature of the touchscreen with the tight control provided by the buttons and the analog sticks, NGP games will have the best of both worlds.

Additionally, the rear touch pad is a total wild card and was one of the biggest sources of discussion during the design phase of NGP. However, when one of our studios developed a prototype of a game they were working on, most of the NGP development team members, whether hardware engineers or game developers, fell in love with the potential of having the large rear touch pad immediately under the screen. The rear touch pad has the same width as the 5-inch OLED screen on the front, which means you can design a one-to-one input between where your fingers are on the rear touch pad and where the game objects are on the touchscreen. You can also use the rear touch pad as additional buttons, or for various other gesture-based inputs.

Can you tell us a little about the enhanced connectivity options and how these might be used?
In terms of the hardware itself, all NGP units will have Wireless connectivity, and some NGP units will have 3G connectivity too. The availability of 3G connectivity will vary depending on your country. 3G will be "always-on", allowing players to keep up to date with everything that's happening with their recently played games, as well as using LiveArea and location based applications such as Near.

How will features such as LiveArea and Near be incorporated into games?
The power of social connectivity within games is enormous. People are social by nature, and it is just more fun in many cases to play with your friends rather than play by yourself or with people you don't know. All WWS titles will make use of LiveArea, some specifics of which we'll be able to share with the public later this year. Some teams are also working on using the location based data to enhance the game experience. This is definitely a new frontier and a new challenge to game developers' creativity.

About NGP with Shuhei Yoshida part 1

The president of SCE Worldwide Studios (WWS) explains the background to the development process for NGP.

How do you feel the reception to NGP from the public and the media has been?
It's been fantastic. We have worked hard on the NGP platform from the software development and creative standpoint, and judging from consumer and media feedback, our belief on various aspects of developing NGP has been well founded. The feedback we have been getting from game developers has been enormously positive, too. Overall, the reception has been hugely energizing.

How long have you been discussing and developing games for NGP?
Since the beginning of 2008, WWS have been officially involved in the development of NGP by SCEI, and not just with developing games, but in the development of the various aspects of the platform itself too, such as hardware performance and component choices, form factor, usability tests, connectivity, user interface and features, target audience, business models and software product portfolio. In short, everything.

What key learnings were you able take from your work on PSP?
PSP was an impressive piece of hardware when it debuted, with the core performance and the screen enabling PlayStation 2 quality games on the go. However, as the home console generation moved to PlayStation 3, consumers felt games of a similar quality should be playable on handheld consoles too. PSP suffers from the lack of dual analog input, which limits the types of games that play well and PlayStation Network was not supported at launch, although this was added at a later date. Clearly, we have given a lot of thought to this and developed the network plans for NGP based on our experience with PSP.

How does NGP open up the portable PlayStation experience to new genres?
Various unique user interfaces and digital distribution will help developers experiment with many different types of games, whether they be intuitive, casual games using dual touch; augmented reality games; location based fun activities or network only, free to play, online games. The possibilities are endless for creative developers.

How much storage will the new physical media allow and what kind of content will be included on it?
Games will be made available via the new game media, which is based on flash memory, the storage capacity of which will be larger than Universal Media Disc. As it is flash memory based, you will be able to store game saves on it, not just the game itself, as well as some downloadable content if space allows.

What games are you most looking forward to?
I'm looking forward to playing action adventure titles and first person shooters with gorgeous graphics using the dual analog sticks, as well as some new, unique titles which will make use of the NGP user interface. I'm intrigued to see what developers will come up with using the rear touch pad too. Finally, I'm looking forward to seeing how the location based info will be used to enhance games. It is exciting to think how you can integrate your location data into the actual gameplay.

How much input has there been from non-SCE developers?
The NGP development team visited many developers and publishers globally with an early prototype of the hardware to get direct feedback. I also personally joined some of the meetings to discuss various aspects of NGP and the options we were looking at. The input of other developers outside of WWS has been essential for us to make final decisions on NGP. As a result of this, we went through many iterations of NGP. It reminded me of the early days of the original PlayStation, when we visited many developers and publishers to get feedback during the development of that product. It's almost as if SCE has gone back to basics, which should be a good thing

Are you planning to provide bespoke games for PlayStation Suite?
Yes, we are looking to provide short form games on PS Suite, which will run on both PlayStation Certified Android devices and NGP. However, the true heroes on PS Suite will be small, independent developers, who are much more nimble and have some creative ideas that have never been seen before. I'm very excited to see what kinds of game these small developers will provide via PS Suite later this year.

How will the types of game in development progress over time?
We are working on our popular series as well as brand new concepts, large games and short form games, augmented reality games, touch only games and network only games. We are also looking to expand over time from hardcore to casual games, games for younger consumers and non-game applications as well. We understand traditional games are not the only entertainment that people look for, and NGP allows us to develop various types of entertainment on the same hardware platform, which is very exciting.

Thanks to Yoshida-san for taking the time out to answer our questions. Keep an eye on ae.playstation.com

About Ten things you need to know about NGP

Find out how portable gaming has changed forever with some essential facts about the exciting next generation portable entertainment system.

1. What's in a name?

NGP stands for next generation portable. After several years of finalising the concept, development of NGP began in 2009 before being unveiled to an eagerly awaiting audience during a press conference in Tokyo on 27 January 2011. As NGP is a code name, an official name for this stunning entertainment system will be unveiled during 2011, so stay tuned.

2. Ultimate Portable Entertainment

NGP is approximately 182mm in width, 18.6mm in depth and 83.5mm in height, which makes it as portable as PSP-3000. Comfort plays a big part in NGP's design, featuring a sleek Super Oval Design to fit snugly in your hands without sacrificing its smooth good looks. Speaking of which...

3. A feast for your eyes

As PSP has already proved, portability is no excuse for poor quality displays. Which is why NGP is equipped with a brilliant organic light emitting diode (OLED) 5-inch screen for incredible picture quality. You can treat yourself to rich, visually striking graphics never seen before on a portable entertainment system. So no matter what form of entertainment you're enjoying - movies, videogames or other digital content - NGP has the visual power to dazzle.

4. Why you're always in control

Videogames are all about versatile and engaging entertainment - so why limit the possibilities? NGP expands your options with its impressive range of controls which ensure you always have your scintillating gameplay at hand. The glossy OLED 5-inch display is also a touch screen, capable of picking up multiple touches at the same time. A revolutionary touch pad at the back of the system means three-dimensional hand motions such as pulling and grabbing are also easy.

None of this means you'll be without options for more traditional game experiences. NGP packs a variety of buttons and two analog sticks, as well as motion sensing functions that react when you tilt and turn the system. Your portable gaming experience has never been so capable, no matter what type of game you're playing.

5. Have a blast with the freshest games

NGP is dedicated to bringing you some of the highest quality videogame entertainment on a portable device. With its unique and versatile control options, you can expect unique experiences. Supported by some of the most popular publishers and developers in the world, including Capcom, SQUARE ENIX and Rockstar Games, the richest gameplay experiences will be yours to enjoy. Don't forget that some of the biggest PlayStation exclusive series will be hitting the system as well, such as Uncharted, Killzone and WipEout.

If you're a PSP owner already, any PSP titles you have previously downloaded from PlayStation Store will be playable on NGP, along with minis and PS one Classics. You'll also be able to download new NGP games and other content directly from PlayStation Store.

For non-downloadable games, NGP uses an innovative flash based memory card which stores full software titles, any add-on game content and game save data.

6. More than games

NGP can do so much more than just play games. You can go online with an Internet browser to check your favourite sites and web based emails, and take advantage of all the thrilling content on PlayStation Store. So you can stream and download all the newest films from the PlayStation Store Video Store and read the freshest comic books from the PlayStation Store Comic Store.

Equally as important is PlayStation Suite, which gives you access to great new content. Developed to offer PlayStation quality games on Android operating system portable devices (such as mobile phones and tablet PCs), newly created content for PlayStation Suite will also become available for NGP. The result will be a broad and ever expanding range of entertainment available for you.

7. Stay connected

NGP features Bluetooth, Wireless and 3G connectivity so whether you're chatting to friends online or blasting through a game with your mates, your portable fun is completely connected.

You'll be pleased to know that PlayStation Network is also integrated, so you'll be able to use your existing PSN account on NGP for a seamless transition between PlayStation systems. Services such as your friends list and trophies are fully supported and shopping from PlayStation Store is a breeze.

8. Get closer to your friends

Every game title for NGP will be provided with a space called LiveArea, where you'll be able keep up to date with all the news and new content around a particular game and share all your fun with friends and other players online. LiveArea constantly updates with accomplishments from users who are playing the same game.

Your journey to new connections doesn't stop there. A pre-installed location based service called Near lets you find out what your geographically nearby friends are playing at the moment. Share and share alike with your mates and make new friends with NGP.

9. There's more...

There are all sorts of features that you'll have fun with on NGP that you may not have even considered. In this bursting package is an electronic compass, front and rear facing cameras for taking pictures and amazing augmented reality games that put you directly into the on-screen action, and a microphone for voice detecting software. Portable entertainment on the cutting edge.

10. Start the countdown...

Next generation portable arrives in shops by the end of 2011. There will be more on the release date in the coming months, so keep checking eu.playstation.com and PlayStation.Blog at blog.eu.playstation.com for all the latest NGP news.

About Ultimate portable entertainment is coming

Sony Computer Entertainment introduces the next generation portable entertainment system that will make its debut in 2011.

On 27 January 2011 at a specially convened press conference in Tokyo, Japan, Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. (SCE) announced its next generation portable entertainment system (code name: NGP), which delivers the ultimate portable entertainment experience.

NGP will arrive at the end of 2011 and is designed to offer unparalleled interactive entertainment that only PlayStation can deliver. This new system offers a revolutionary combination of rich gaming and social connectivity within a real world context, made possible by maximising SCE's experience from both PSP and PlayStation 3.

Deep and immersive gaming is at the core of the PlayStation DNA, and NGP is the latest embodiment of this vision. By having both Wireless and 3G network connectivity, together with various applications, NGP will enable infinite possibilities for users to connect, share and play with friends wherever they are.

The device includes a range of features that provide a genuinely cutting-edge, next generation, ultimate portable entertainment experience, such as:

* Stunning OLED and Revolutionary User Interface

NGP incorporates a beautiful multi touch, 5-inch organic light emitting diode (OLED) as the front display. A high performance CPU / GPU combined with OLED enables rich, visually striking graphics never seen before on a portable entertainment system, for both games and other digital entertainment content. The new system also incorporates a unique multi touch pad on the rear, and together with the front touch display, NGP offers new gameplay allowing users to interact directly with games in three dimension-like motion, through "touch, grab, trace, push and pull" hand movements.

* Super Oval Design and Dual Analog Sticks

While succeeding the basic design philosophy of PSP, NGP adopts the Super Oval Design form factor, created to fit comfortably in users' hands. For the first time, a portable entertainment system will feature two analog sticks, which enable a wider range of genres to be brought into the world of portable videogaming.

* LiveArea™

Every game title for NGP will be provided with a space called LiveArea™ where users can share the fun and excitement with other players. Users will have access to the latest information on games from developers and publishers via PlayStation Network. Additionally, NGP users will be able to view an Activity log that is constantly updated with accomplishments from users who are playing the same game, which can trigger active real time communication among users.

* Near

SCE will also provide location-based services on NGP as part of the basic features utilising PlayStation Network. The new application called Near, developed specifically for this service and the network, will be pre-installed on the system to let users find out what their friends in the vicinity are playing right now or what they were playing recently. Users can meet their friends and new players virtually, regardless of what games they are playing, simply by sharing their game information across the dimensions of time and distance.

* New Game Medium

NGP adopts a new game medium, a small, flash memory based card, dedicated for NGP software titles. Taking advantage of the flash memory feature, this innovative card can store full software titles plus add-on game content or game save data. By adopting a flash memory based card solution, SCE will be able to provide game cards with higher capacity in the future, allowing developers to store more game data to deliver rich and immersive games.

NGP will also come equipped with two cameras, one on the front and one on the rear of the system, as well as three motion sensors, gyroscope, accelerometer and electronic compass, all of which are designed to enable users to enjoy a world of entertainment that is linked with real life experiences.

PlayStation®Suite (PS Suite), announced at the same time as NGP, will also closely co-ordinate with NGP. The newly developed and released game content for Android based portable devices can also be enjoyed on NGP. As a result, users will have access to not only the most leading-edge content, but also some of the more casual experiences that typify the mobile market place.

Killzone
War against the Helghast began in Killzone for PlayStation 2, and it is given frightening intensity in Killzone 2 and Killzone 3 on PS3. As Tomas "Sev" Sevchenko, you are leading the fightback deep into planet Helghan, and where the drama ends in Killzone 2, it begins once more in Killzone 3.
